Among the best things to do after dinner in the Cotswolds is to visit one of its many characterful country pubs. Traditional inns litter picture postcard villages. Under the summer sun, their pretty beer gardens throng with people. And when the weather turns, most have a roaring open fire to cozy up around.

But this English region has plenty more to offer, both within the Cotswolds AONB (Neighborhood of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and in the towns and cities which lie just outside it. From theaters to nightclubs, there’s plenty to keep you occupied after dark. Here are ideas on where to go in the Cotswolds at night.

Porch House in Stow-on-the-Wold has a strong claim to be considered England’s oldest pub. Aging lumber beams, wonky doorways, flagstone floors and worn stone walls certainly reflect its longevity. It’s thought that there has been an inn on this spot for almost 11 centuries – parts of the building date from AD 947.

Step inside this charming Cotswold limestone building and try a pint of Porch House 947, the Brakspear pub's signature craft beer. On a cold night, pull up a stool in front of the ancient fireplace – its markings said to be engraved by witches. In summer, there’s a terrace perfect for making the most of a warm evening.

    Location: 1 Digbeth Street, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham GL54 1BN, UK

Open: Monday–Wednesday from noon to 10.30 pm, Thursday–Saturday from noon to 11 pm, Sunday from noon to 9 pm
