Locality great hotel poor

10/10 Exceptional

centrally located accommodation

The hotel is located just next to the Tube station Russell Square. The rooms were clean and everything worked well.
Stephan, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

A bit dated, but clean and perfect for staying in town after office xmas party.
1-night trip

8/10 Very good

Was ok … just stayed one night and wanted a cheap hotel. Close to Eurostar start line. Was clean and bed comfy…
Justine, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

Good location. Easy check in and out. Soap and shampoo provided. A little dated.

Location

Very basic hostel level but the location is excellent, literally two steps from Piccadilly line underground from Heathrow. Lots of restaurants close by and good 24hr Tesco opposite. Clean but old premises, comfortable beds. Family room in the basement is great for 4-5 people and has full kitchen (old style).
Nina, 4-night trip

6/10 Good

Read other reviews of bed bugs and dirt and was concerned - stayed on top floor: it was clean, no trace of pests. The bathroom was a retro 80s set up, nothing to fault. You pay for what you get: the Russell is basic but ideal for seeing London. Stayed in far more expensive places that have been far worse.

Not the best

This is not a hotel, it’s basically a room that was rented. There’s no service, no amenities, we took out our garbage after a few days. It’s hot and tiny for three people. It was a great location, and quiet. It’s cheaper than most “hotels” in London but there are reasons why it’s cheaper.
Lori, 5-night trip

8/10 Very good

The location is great, our room was clean, and the beds were comfortable. The entrance and hallway are beat-up and smell funky but the bedroom and shared bath were fine. Not a fancy place, but a good price. The location is surprisingly quiet, even though it is right next to the Russell Square station.

No hot water. Otherwise room was adequate and seemed very clean. More like a hostel than a hotel. Well sited.

2/10 Poor

Awful!

This is not a hotel just a series of rooms
1-night trip

2/10 Poor

This is a conveniently located absolute dump. Trashy in all respects. Last renovated in the 70s it is used furniture from a bad yard sale.
JOHN, 2-night trip

6/10 Good

pretty poor standard for that prize, no service, very basic and narrow
Roland, 6-night trip

2/10 Poor

Bedbugs everywhere (yes we have photos) - forced to leave early into multi-day stay. Staff non-existent. Management unresponsive to email, phone, and Expedia. Bedbugs so bad that it required visit to doctor, prescription steroids, destruction of some luggage, enormous cleaning expense. No refund.
Jennifer, 11-night trip

2/10 Poor

The staff are terrible poor customer services

Basic but Comfortable

Ideal for a one- nighter, comfortable but basic. Let down by difficulty in communication! Their idea of 24 hour reception is going outside and ringing the doorbell to get attention! Their phone number on the website is invalid and they don't respond to messages via the website either so that was frustrating when I was trying to ensure that I could leave my bag prior to check-in
Terry, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

The property was not what it appeared to be in photos, and there was a bad odor that was helped by opening the window and blowing the fan. Toilet seat was broken and the overhead light failed to illuminate at times.
Martha, 4-night trip

Bed bugs

That's not a 3 star hotel. Zero stars.... the room was soooo small not like in the pictures In room number 6 I've been bitten by some bed bugs. The hotel is not recommended guys. Try to avoid it and dont try to save some money

Convenient but not worth £180

I stayed at The Russell Square hotel for an overnight stay while working in London. Desperate times call for desperate measures but this was genuinely the only hotel I could find for less than £200 in central London. Arriving at around 11pm, I was given my key and walked up the narrow flight of stairs to my room. It was reminiscent of a student bedroom from the 80's and in desperate need of modernisation. Wouldn't stay here again if I had a choice.

Over promised but under delivered.

The room was much smaller than expected,3 people in it would have been impossible. There was nowhere to hang clothes. Very basic funishing and decorations. No one serviced the room in the 3 days, not even to empty waste bin.
Lesley, 3-night trip

8/10 Very good

An ideal London stopover, no frills.

Our short stay was fine. I would suggest 3 of things. 1) a few more hangers. We were 3 and only had 2 hangers 2) state in your writeup that there is a hair dryer. 3) organise something so one can contact the hotel. The number provided 02032896304 and 02078377686 are never answered. While some complained about the noise we never heard anything. The furniture and carpeting are dated but clean and functional. The room was quite small for 3 but as we were only there to sleep it didn't bother us. The location is a 100% advantage so well worth the price.

This was the worst hotel I ever stayed, for £200 for 2 nights I had nothing in the room, no kettle to, no tea or coffee, no breakfast. Even it was a 3 star hotel it had to have all this, I expected. When I asked the owner for the kettle, he gave me a broken one, I had to ask for another. I don't like asking. For £200 I should have booked a better hotel.
Karina, 2-night trip

2/10 Poor

Our room was a triple with a shared bathroom. This room is not shown on the website BEWARE. This room is more like a hostel not hotel. There is no air, no fridge, no tv remote. No coffee, kettle or anything. The bedroom is not a solid door so lights go on and off all night as people come and go. Beds are horribly hard. The shared bathroom we had was the pink one shown on the website and the pictures make it look good. It is not. However there is a 25 hour store across the street to get what you need. The location is good. 15 minute walk to the train station and the tube is right next door. If you are looking for a very basic no amenities room this would be for you
Deirdre, 3-night trip

Writing this review with a heavy heart. We were previous occupants at this hotel back in 2022 and had an amazing experience. Now visiting again in 2024 it was a more than disappointing experience. The staff was invisible after ringing the bell multiple times for maintenance. We stayed 5 nights with no maid service in sight, after requesting new towels, sheets, etc. Toilet was out of order for our room and weren’t offered any accommodations. Staff said they’d have a plumber come out and fix it the following day… no plumber came! Cleanliness of our room was poor. Hair was everywhere in the bathroom, on the floor, sink, shower… even in the bed! Bathroom smelled of mold and mildew. The only redeeming factor was the location of this place. Right next to the tube and near many food options/ attractions. For the price, you get what you get.
Hailey, 2-night trip

4/10 Fair

Shabby and outdated

Standard very poor outdated and shabby! No en-suite and bathroom old. Bathroom light didn’t work 1st night! No bedside table or tea /coffee making facilities! Bedroom door had a large glass panel so constantly disturbed by outside light. On top of this the cost was not cheap so extremely disappointing for price paid
