Marktplatz (Market Square) is surrounded by landmarks including the Stuttgart City Hall and the flagship Breuninger department store, all of which look dazzling when illuminated at night. Though the square dates back to the 12th century, it was destroyed during WWII and now bears little resemblance to its origins. A makeover in 2020 saw the addition of new features including a water fountain.

While exploring Marktplatz, you might want to browse displays of local cheese, meat, and global cuisine at the Markthalle Stuttgart (it stays open until 6.30 pm). Keep your eyes peeled for annual events such as the Weindorf, where you can stock up on over 350 Swabian wines.

Schlossplatz is the largest public square in the city of Stuttgart. It was reserved as a military parade ground up until the mid-19th century. Today, you can explore notable landmarks like the Baroque Neues Schloss (New Palace), the 30-metre-tall Jubiläumssäule column, and the former Königsbau local stock exchange. You can also see manicured lawns and flowerbeds that were installed in 2006, following the staging of the World Cup Finals.

Keep your eyes peeled for annual events in Schlossplatz, which include open-air concerts, children’s fairs, and the Weihnachten market festival. The illuminated golden Mercury Pillar looks especially mesmerising at night.

Pay a visit to the bars and clubs along Steinstraße if you want to let your hair down for the night in Stuttgart. As one of the city’s best streets for nightlife, it’s lined with thumping nightclubs, laidback dive bars, cocktail dens, and live entertainment venues. Best of all, these hotspots are within walking distance of the Rathaus subway station.

Many drinking establishments on Steinstraße, such as 1.Stock, Romantica, Schräglage Club, and 7grad, don’t open their doors until after 10 pm. If you want to get an early start, check out Ruby Bar Stuttgart, Boa Disco Stuttgart, or Shocken Events.
