Booked this room online while en route to Laos for a visa run, traveling with my Thai girlfriend of one year. Front desk had difficulty confirming the online reservation. We were "upgraded" to a room with a barely functioning shower and lukewarm water. Exhausted from a long drive, we slept. Room was comfortable and clean.
At breakfast, the staff harassed my girlfriend, accusing her of having snuck into the hotel to steal food! I was shocked and addressed this immediately with the front desk. The behavior stopped. However, at checkout, the staff asked whether I had paid for the room already or not. As I had booked and paid online, they certainly had record of my full payment. The message was clear: weary travelers whose momentary appearance does not convey "high society" affiliation are not welcome and will be treated poorly. As a medical professional with an advanced degree and national board certification, I am very disappointed with this treatment. Do I need to wear a tailored suit during a road trip, in order to be treated with basic respect? Furthermore, I have never witnessed such active discrimination against Thai people based upon (inaccurately) perceived class affiliation. Absolutely deplorable.
