My father is from Brownsville, so I used to visit as a kid. I hadn't been back in a while, and I remembered the old, slow, town. It's grown incredibly over the last 10 years, and modernized its options for shopping and eating.

Excellent
Brownsville was one of 4 cities we stayed at and it had the best food options (we avoid chains). Look for the local places with the full parking lots and you can't go wrong.

I don't think the general area is bad, but questionable live-in guests give the feeling of an unsafe environment.
"The hotel itself was very good considering the low price we paid. Amenities were in great condition, no defects. The areas around the hotel were all at a walkable distance which was great because we didn’t have to use our car much. Only downside was the bedding was uncomfortable and scratchy, would recommend bringing your own blankets. "
