Lots of hype about this hotel. Granted it nicely renovated in a retro style. However the breakfast was over promoted and I was crestfallen. Sugary bakery products in a plastic bag that looked like they came out of a vending machine. Fresh fruit in a bowl was an apple or orange. We grabbed a coffee and left.

It was nice that they had coffee ready by 6:00am each morning with breakfast treats. We also enjoyed sitting in the HUB and playing cards with a deck they had available for guests.

A great conversion of a motel into a fun, sporty place. Nice rooms with good amenities, easy to get in and out of with your bike or hiking shoes. And close to all the good restaurants and brew pubs downtown.

This adorable, boutique hotel was easy to find, had on-site parking and exceeded my expectations in terms of cleanliness and warmth. The young man who checked me in (and was a constant smiling face throughout my stay) was friendly, helpful and full of great recommendations about the area. The Heliotrope is an updated vintage motel. It was super charming and very conveniently located close to downtown. Bed was comfortable, room was clean, and the area felt safe. Walls are a little thin. The morning we left we overheard the room next to us having a very animated conversation. We weren’t sure if it was happy and excited or a fight.

Nice little Bellingham hotel

Great location. Especially if you have a bike to bomb around Bellingham. Service was great and super friendly. My only complaint is that the carpets were pretty gross. Probably time to replace. Also it’s a little pricey for what it is. I’d expect this to be closer to $100 a night but I guess there’s high demand

Some Pros, Some Cons

We stayed at the Heliotrope for the first time recently - it was our first night staying in Bellingham actually. Pros: 1) Location was cool, only about a mile from some bars, music venues, and restaurants. 2) Cody at the front desk was awesome. Great service, super nice, had some good recommendations for restaurants/bars. 3) They gave us a free room upgrade when we got there which was nice. Cons: 1) We didn’t know there was an extra incidentals fee of $75 until we were checking in at the front desk. For people on a tight budget, that would be very bad. Still waiting on that to get reversed. 2) Our room wasn’t in great condition. Our remote for our heater didn’t work, Cody had to get us a new one so that was fixed pretty quickly. Some of the outlets didn’t work, and this was the first place we’ve ever stayed at that didn’t have a microwave in the room. 3) The front office was supposed to be open 24/7 but we tried to go get some ice at like 11pm and it was locked. Overall, we might consider staying here again, but we’ll most likely check out other hotels in the area when we return.
