I saw a lot of reviews saying the surrounding areas are super unsafe, but I did not find that to be the case. It has a sketchy vibe because it is clearly a less populated, less well-lit, and lower income area, but the people just minded their own business even though I was a single woman wandering the city even at night. The management was very responsive as well.
The area was only an issue for me because it was so far from center city New York. It's advertised on Expedia as 35 minute walk away but that's not the case it's like an hour away. There's no good dining and cocktail bar options within walking distance. My biggest issue was that the walls are paper thin. My neighbors were insanely starting at 10 pm all the way till 5 am in the morning so I barely slept. I tried banging on the wall to get them to stop and I complained to management but it only continued. This was the experience that made me never want to come back. The building is also very old so the creaking weird noises in the middle of the night. I would not recommend staying here if you have the money to spend unless you're willing to commute a lot, wear super strong ear plugs, and just need a place to sleep.
