Good budget hotel

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel, it was basic, but clean, the beds were comfy. The rooms were tidied every day and towels replaced, when needed. The included breakfast was adequate. A good mix of fruit, cereal, meat, cheese and eggs. The staff were friendly and helpful. It’s really close to public transport and the shops. The only minor comment is the mixer tap should have a hot water warning sign as it got very hot, very quickly and scolded my hand. Overall a pleasant stay.

Spotless clean room, working desk, great internet wireless, elevator working, very good heating and hot water. Comfortable beds and pillows. Nice breakfast. Smoking area outside, even standing, but with wall asthray. Very good area in very short walking distance (max 250 meters) to kiosks, restaurants, bars. 4.5 km from main Cologne train station, a 10-12 euro by Uber. Great price on BB rate, and excellent value for money. Not luxury, to say this, and maybe in need to change some carpets etc and improve minor details, but spotless clean, at least the room I had and what else we saw during a night stay. It exceeded my expectations after reading the bad reviews, but maybe they had changes in management and personnel. Most glad I would book it again if I need an overnight stay in that area in Cologne (2.5 km from University Hospital of Cologne).

Disappointing Customer Service

The hotel’s location was excellent and made getting around the city very easy — definitely its strongest point. However, I found the room to be quite outdated and was surprised that there was no kettle or coffee maker, which made things a bit inconvenient. Check-in was only available at 15:30, which felt a bit late. I had originally booked one night and then made a second booking for the following night. Both reservations were for the same type of room. When I arrived, I was told by the hotel staff that the second booking was for a more expensive room and that I needed to pay an additional fee plus city tax. I contacted Hotels.com to clarify the situation, and their representative confirmed that both of my bookings were indeed for the same room type. They told me they would speak with the hotel on my behalf. After doing so, they informed me that the hotel refused to refund the extra charge. Unfortunately, this experience left me disappointed. I do not believe the hotel handled the situation in a customer-friendly or professional manner.

I was nervous about booking this hotel based on the reviews but it far surpassed our expectations. All staff were very helpful, 24 hour reception, extensive free breakfast, lift, clean bedding and room, a safe and hair dryer in the room, very close to transport restaurants and supermarkets. Only minor downside is no kettle in the room. I would recommend this hotel to any and would definitely stay here again if I was in the city.
