Super welcoming staff - really made a difference. This is a great place to stay if you’re flying to/from Stansted as it’s a far pleasant experience than the airport hotels. It was so lovely that I’d book a weekend break there to explore the local area more.

Staff excellent and ample parking in a quiet location with beautiful trees surrounding the area. We stayed in a twin room which was compact (no room for hanging space) slightly chilly so the thick duvet was welcome. We ate in evening in the pub with a choice between small plates/starter, main and dessert on the menu …..ours was very good. There is a small kitchenette along the hall for hot drinks and for you to prepare yourself a breakfast, toast, cereal, yogurt etc. The cost through Hotels.com of £230+ we think was too high for this basic reservation and maybe should have investigated the accommodation further….totally our fault.

We stayed at the Black Horse as we were going to a friends evening wedding reception in Nuthampstead which is about 3.5 miles away. This was one of the nearest places we could find to stay. Please don’t use Uber when you’re coming back from somewhere to the Black Horse because they are likely to cancel on you, use the local taxi company. The host was very nice. We had a lovely large luxury room called Shonks, comfy bed, lovely bathroom with a great shower. There is use of a shared kitchen in the morning and you can help yourself to things like coffee, toast and cereals. The only thing I would perhaps improve upon is I feel that the window in a kind of little hallway area when you come out the bathroom could have a curtain or net curtain on it. It was a lovely surprise to find that there were people setting up stalls the morning after we stayed and I actually bought some lovely handmade bags but I don’t know how much they wanted to see me coming out the shower in my towel. We would definitely stay again.

Absolutely delightful! The staff were super friendly, food was delicious, room was simply decorated which added to the tranquility and calm, it was clean, comfortable and lovely. Genuinely couldn’t fault this place, and what a beautiful area it’s in.

Extremely personable landlord, Craig. Room was prepared ready for us to check in early (off to a wedding after a long drive) and sandwiches provided on request which was very much appreciated. The room and bathroom were spacious and nicely decorated and the bed very comfortable. Little communal kitchen area provided everything needed for a late night snack and breakfast which was a nice touch. Heard from local friends at the wedding that the food is great too. Favourite beer on tap which sadly we had no time to sample. There will be a next time! Highly recommend.

This place was just a gem! Such friendly service way above and beyond. The building is absolutely beautiful. Walked into the coziest pub with a nice fire going and friendly service. Can't wait to come back!

The Black Horse was gem in a nice country setting. Craig was a great host, plenty of walking trails around the area. Tuesday was steak night (compliments to the chef it was fantastically done!) An impromptu gathering of locals forming a shanty group was a fun and unique experience. Craig pours a good pint of Guinness which is a bonus! Room was spacious and tidy with my own private bathroom, kitchenet with continental breakfast. Craig was on hand if I needed anything! Would recommend and will be stopping again when in the area for work.

Lovely find.. specious and fresh room... We were late to arrive so only found shower stuff in the shared kitchen next morning.. Maybe a suggestion of a better size quicker kettle in the bedroom...other than that ...all good

Beautiful bedroom very large and spacious, as was the en-suite shower room. The bed and bedding were excellent and I had a wonderful nights sleep. The water in the shower was hot and a good pressure. However the flush for the toilet was not working. I would also recommend the owners supply bedside lights as there were none and the main light switch was over by the door. A kettle and teabags/coffee were provided in the room but no milk or water. I would also recommend a fresh homemade loaf be available for breakfast rather than the brown sliced loaf in plastic. With a few small editions it could be excellent.

The Pub was a grade 2 listed building which was a 1700 era the best way to describe it is Quirky! . The internal pub area was full of history and upstairs the rooms fixtures and fitting new with the decoration being fresh but sympathetic to the age of the building. the food was good Pub Grub and the cooked breakfast was great Full English or Full Scottish Both filling and well cooked, served piping hot! Lovely outside area and caters for Dogs.

Lovely country pub, with beautifully decorated rooms. Staff were welcoming and food good value. The rooms could be imroved by having somewhere to put your clothes, even a chair or a hanger on a coat rack, but ours ended up on the floor. There was a hairdryer under the sink in the shared kitchen, but I would prefer one in the room. I would also prefer tea/coffee making facilities in the room, rather than walking down the corridor to make a drink in the shared kitchen. The continental breakfast was good, and was left in the shared kitchen, but a tray would have been useful to carry it back to the room. There are no TVs in the room, which is unusual. I would check they are serving food when you are staying. Its a great pub, and I would stay again.

Beyond the exquisitely accommodating staff was a community that took us in and made us feel welcome. You would not believe the true tales of generosity so we won’t share them. Did a late booking for a business trip. Great service by staff who contacted me and explained the self check in process as I arrived in the late evening. Accommodated a late change I made and were very helpful. Beautifully renovated property with lots of parking, spacious room with good amenities and comfy bed and bedding. Spotlessly clean room and bathroom. Highly recommended for business or pleasure!!!

Room was double booked

We arrived and were told that another couple was in our room. The staff offered us a complimentary drink while they sorted it out, we were led to believe there was jut a mix-up. However the room was double booked, the staff asked a family member to vacate another room for us with no ensuite and said they wouldn't charge me but I haven't had my money back over a month later.

A great wee hotel, great food, a great tranquil location and fantastic staff. Highly recommend it. It’s only a 30 drive from Stansted airport but in a rural location. Ideal for a quiet getaway .

We had a great stay for a wedding. We got to check in early and the staff that we saw were super helpful and lovely. We would definitely come back again
