The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, also known as MACRO, features both permanent and rotating exhibits of Italian artwork dating back to the mid-20th century. The museum as it stands today opened its doors in 2002, although an initial phase consisting of 6 rooms was opened in 1999.

With its main site in an old brewery located in the Salario neighbourhood and an annexe, MACRO Future, in a one-time slaughterhouse in the Testaccio neighbourhood, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome attracts locals and tourists alike with its ever-changing exhibits and modern designs.

What are the highlights of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome?

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome permanent collection showcases significant pieces of Italian art ranging from the latter half of the 20th century onward, such as the group Forma 1. However, the museum rotates the pieces on display, making them all semi-permanent.

An auditorium marks the space for these as well as more temporary exhibitions and special events, with educational spaces highlighting their historical, cultural and artistic significance. A bookstore, a library and a cafe allow for further education and relaxation so that you can pause or browse at your leisure.
