Milos is a sparkling Greek island with some of the best beaches in the Aegean Sea. There's a lot of variety available, despite the island's small size, ranging from soft sand to pebbly and from family-friendly to romantically isolated. The water off the shore is generally clear and often calm, especially where it's protected by sandbars and coves.

Coupled with delicious food choices and unique history (it’s where the Venus de Milo was discovered), Milos is an excellent destination if you’re looking for hidden gems in Greece outside the more popular destinations like Mykonos and Santorini. Read on to learn about which Milos beach is right for you.

Firopotamos is the beach for you if you want to enjoy the sun and sand while being surrounded by signature Greek architecture. You can enjoy the vivid blue glass-like waters while sunning and swimming along a stretch of sandy beach.

The main draw of the beach is the slew of picturesque white-walled fishing houses with blue doors that surround the 100-metre stretch of sand. Tamarisk trees also dot the shoreline while the Church of Saint Nicholas stands above it all.

Although Kastanas Beach is a little difficult to get to if you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle, it's worth the trip. Just park about 100 metres away from the beach and walk the rest of the way. The trek pays off as soon as you see the stunning colours of the various rock formations around the water. Vibrant shades of orange, purple and red are just some of the hues surrounding the clear, cool waters.

The only drawback is that the strikingly coloured pebble beach can get quite hot, so be sure to have proper footwear.

Agia Kyriaki Beach is a bit smaller than some of the other best beaches in Milos, but it’s also less crowded. If you want a more quiet beach experience, it’s a wonderful choice. What also sets it apart from other beaches is that a long white strip of pebbles that glisten in the sun make up the shoreline, so the beach glitters during the day.

If you want to lounge on the beach, you can rent lounge chairs and an umbrella for the day.

Provatas is a beautiful and easily accessible beach that is often called the Golden Beach because of its large yellowish golden-red sandy shore and bright emerald waters. It's located in the south of Milos, and you can reach it easily by car or bus.

Provatas is a good choice for families as the beach is easy to get to and the sand is soft. Plus, there are several establishments nearby, such as restaurants and bars, so beachgoers don’t need to bring too many items with them other than their swimwear, sunscreen and towels.

Ammoudaraki is a remote beach getaway on the west side of Milos that you can enjoy in privacy if you make the journey to get there. The beach can be reached by a track branching from the Triades trail that you can drive on with a sedan or a 4x4 vehicle, although this approach is not recommended. You can also reach the beach by boat.

As it's a bit challenging to reach Ammoudaraki, it's always less full than the more popular Milos beaches. Here, you can enjoy swimming along the shoreline or out to the rocks, nearby coves and even the overhanging rock formations. The beach is also surrounded by vegetation and low cliffs.

The Alogomandra Beach is known for a signature vault-like stone formation that presides over the sandy shoreline. It creates a unique ocean cave pool where beachgoers can enjoy warm waters under the shade provided by the rocks.

While some may enjoy lounging and swimming below the rock formation, more daring beachgoers can also jump off the surrounding rocks into the ocean waters. The beach itself is quite small, but it doesn’t usually get crowded.

Adamas Beach is a long and narrow stretch of sand that merges with Papikinou Beach to the south. It's located right in the village of Adamas – the main port of Milos. While Adamas Beach itself doesn’t have many tourist establishments, it has a grove of trees that provide natural shade and a very shallow sea bottom that's good for travellers with children. Even so, the sand does have its share of pebbles, so make sure you wear protective footwear.

After enjoying the beach, you can also walk over to the nearby village and do some exploring.

Paleochori Beach is in the south of Milos and is easily accessible for beachgoers looking to experience Milos’ volcanic history. When swimming in the sea in Paleochori, you'll be surprised by the slight odour of sulphur from the underwater springs protruding like mini volcano craters from the seabed. They also warm up the water in certain places and are unique to look at, so don’t forget your goggles or snorkelling gear.

If you want to stay by the shore, though, you won’t lack for interesting things to see. The pebbled beach has seawater-polished pebbles in bright hues ranging from red to orange and brown.

    Paliorema Beach

Enjoy your ocean swim with a view of abandoned sulphur mines

Paliorema is one of the strangest beach destinations in the world and is certainly for those looking for a highly unique beach experience. It's located on the shore of an abandoned sulphur mine in Thiorichia, and instead of lush vegetation or pristine beach facilities, beachgoers are surrounded by abandoned mining buildings, old wagons, various vintage tools and machine parts.

The colours of the rock formations surrounding the Paliorema as well as the abandoned buildings make it look like a long-lost archaeological site. Known more for the mines than the water, there aren’t usually many swimmers and sunbathers, although you can enjoy the sun and sand. The ruins, however, attract visitors, so don’t expect to be alone. You can reach Paliorema via an old dirt road that ends just above the mine. From there, you need to walk 500 metres on a wide path to get to the beach.

Located on the west side of Milos, Agathia Beach is a bit hard to access as the road is long and bumpy, but you'll marvel at its beauty once you make the trip. While it’s more expansive than other cosier coves, the water is warm and pristine, and it stays shallow even far from the shoreline.

As it's not as easily accessible as other options, Agathia also usually offers more privacy than other Milos beaches. It's a great choice if you want some alone time to reflect.
