Nice, quiet Ryokan
My girlfriend and I stayed in Takayama for 3 nights, and we really enjoyed this place. The owners are a quiet but friendly Japanese couple who don't speak a ton of English, but it wasn't really a problem at all. The location is nice, just on the fringes of the old city, about a 5 min bike ride or 15 min walk to the main center of town. They have tons of bikes for guests to use, and it's a really beautiful little town to bike through. The onsen was a nice bonus, and it was always kept very clean. Just note that they are gender separated, and like a traditional Japanese onsen you bathe naked. There's a nice guide on the wall of the change room that shows you everything you need to know about proper onsen etiquette. Overall we'd recommend this place to anyone looking for the Ryokan experience in Takayama.

It was a serviceable hotel
We were only passing through Takayama and needed an inexpensive place to stay (which is all relative when traveling in Japan during cherry blossom season in April. The prices everywhere seem to go up exponentially at that time. Even though we booked at least 2 months prior to our trip, it was very difficult to find a nice place at a mid-range price. The Minshuku Iwatatkan was clean and had an okay public bath. It was a bit far from the train station or any points of ear interest, but they did have a shuttle to/from the station.

Good little ryokan in a residential area..The only problem was that if you had not ordered dinner on booking, they would not provide dinner, even with 24 hours notice....Some might find it too far from the centre town, but we liked being in this nice residential street, not far from the reiver.

A lovely traditional experience in a mountain town
Minshuku Iwatakan was one of the nicest places I stayed on my three week trip to Japan with my fiancée. We stayed May 16 and 17. Although a little far from the train station, the place was an exceptionally clean and quiet guesthouse. The traditional room was large and expansive, with comfortable tatami mats lining the floor. There was more than enough room for my fiancée and I. The workers were friendly, although their English was extremely limited. That being the case, however, there was no trouble arranging things with them. The room had an air-conditioning unit, which was nice during the hot days. Although the . The place is a little distant from the centre of the old town, but the centre of Takayama is extremely small and getting to the main part of town was a very pleasant stroll along a gorgeous riverbank. As well, the guesthouse has free bicycles for guests to use, which is excellent. It allowed us to bike out to the Hida Folk Village a few kilometres south, and one of our most enjoyable experiences was biking along the riverbank at 10pm at night after all the shops and restaurants had closed and there were few lights but the stars overhead. Such an experience was made possible by the convenience of the guesthouse. Finally, although there is a shared bathroom at Minshuku Iwatakan, it was never an issue. The washrooms were always clean and the communal showers were comfortable. The hot spring is a bonus.

Great memories of Takayama thanks to a great hotel
I really loved this hotel. At the train station, when asking for directions to this hotel, the woman at the information counter rang the hotel for us and the lovely owner came to pick us up in a van. Likewise, when we were running late for out train out of Takayama, the hotel had not problem in rushing us to the station. Minshuku Iwatakan was a traditional ryokan, so it meant shoes off in the foyer, and slippers throughout the rest of the hotel. The tatami mat rooms were incredibly spacious, and had a lovely relaxing ambience. It was quite cold in Takayama at the time (early April) but thankfully the heater/air conditioner worked well. The free bicycle hire was an utterly fantastic way of exploring the town and the free umbrellas came in really handy too. Finally, the onsen, with it's indoor and outdoor pool was a really nice way to unwind from a long day of sightseeing.

Close to park, morning market and shrines
My wife and I stayed in Takayama in December and it snowed very heavily. We got snowed in for three days and were the only guests at Iwatakan. The staff were very accommodating but and it's a great little place but being at the back of the town against the hill in the older historic section you could tell that they weren't expecting guests and they seemed almost surprised to see us arrive.
