We were driving from the UK to the south west of France and wanted somewhere to stay en route. What a wonderful surprise this place was. The house is a big, beautiful, old (really old!) property with very generous rooms and lovely ensuite bathrooms. The hosts are very welcoming and generous. Saintes - who knows why that big town is not more widely known as a tourist destination. Incredible architecture, lovely river walks, greta places to eat. And the best bit - we have 2 large excitable dogs who were allowed to stay too! I cannot recommend this place more highly.

We booked this accommodation very late in the day and after a quick phonecall to the property after making the booking, we were given clear instructions on how to get there. The owners waited for us and directed us to their property. We were given a very warm welcome after a very long day. The property is very quirky which we absolutely loved. The bedrooms in the property were very clean and very well presented. We were given very good reccommendations by the owners for food and drink and both were excellent. We loved our stay there and enjoyed talking with the owners about the property over a fresh french breakfast. Thank you Armande, Monique and Jim!!

Lovely 16C old house in the centre of Saintes bags of character and very friendly, informative hosts. A little rickety due to its age but this just adds to the charm. Bottom line is that we would be happy to visit again.

Quirky
If you like old and quirky this will be ok for you. Charming hosts but the Madame was unwell and the promised parking had been flooded. Out of season visit so it would have been better if they cancelled and we found an alternative. The room is on top floor of a period home,it is bnb not a hotel. Room- no headboard, no bedside tables, no tea/ coffee/ kettle, no lock on door- 2 flights of stairs to access. Parking on street nearby very expensive and not secure. We stayed 2 nights and it was a question of topping up the machine - around €40. No pool or restaurant as listed by hotels.com.( we didn’t require either but it is misleading). We are English, period buildings very common to us, we have lived in several much older! On the plus side it was nice and warm as weather freezing and you can take dogs.

Business trip with the family
On a business trip to Saintes with the family, the Red Door Inn is located right in the heart of town, with beautiful old building and quaint streets. We used the secured underground parking just a 5 minutes’ walk away and left the car there for a few days. The house is very traditional and full of character, the room was a good size, very comfortable, warm and homely. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We will stay there again if we return to Saintes.

This B&B is easy to find by foot on Rue de Jardins. It's a 14th century townhouse owned by an American expat family. Armand is bilingual and very informative regarding the sites to see in Saintes. She is also a delightful and attentive host, and a textile artisan to boot! My room was ample in size, rustic with a beamed ceiling, and a sizeable in-suite bathroom. Breakfast was served in her wonderful garden, in the shadow of Saint-Pierre Cathedral. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks Armand!

A wonderful, unique historical building in the heart of Saintes, only a few moments walk from the river and cathedral. Monique and her husband are glorious hosts, the delicious breakfast is served in their hidden garden. A fabulous find and one we hope to return to

Quirky B and B
Quirky b and b close to centre of town in an old house in a quiet street. The church bells do stop at night! Attractive garden where we had breakfast and were invited to make use of in the afternoon. We had an en suite, but design means you can hear (and see) just about everything. Nice breakfast with homemade jams and fresh orange juice

Charming authentic ancient building
Hotel is very different from a normal hotel. It is an amazing old property, we stayed in the suite which had an amazing roll top bath looking out of a window at an ancient church opposite. Total privacy as on the top floor and no windows opposite. The room was great and the keys are like something out of Harry Potter. Hosts were very kind but not intrusive. The garden makes for a lovely breakfast spot.

Although it was a short, one night stay, we were so happy to have discovered La Porte Rouge. It was wonderful to stay in a historic place that, while obviously protective of its rustic charm and aesthetic, still had comfortable and very accommodating rooms. To make great things greater, our hosts were so hospitable, kind and easy to talk to, even helping us weary travelers find a great meal (Restaurant 29) when most places were closing for the evening. Again, it was a short stay, but one we wished was longer. La Porte Rouge is certainly a place to come back to.

Full of character, a small family B&B hotel
Really enjoyed my 1 night stop over while driving through France. Top floor room nice and warm in December. No TV but there is WiFi and from their central location plenty of bars and restaurants a short stroll. Hotel and central area is mostly pedestrianised (no traffic noise), be prepared for parking a short walk away. Access is by knocking on the red door. Thanks to Annette, Armande and James for their hospitality, who also kindly spoke excellent English.

Don't miss this charming stopover.
Not every day you stay in a 16th century residence. Thoroughly charming and characterful with a "fairy garden". Owners are very helpful and welcoming, and the age of the property does not affect the modernity and comfort of the guest rooms with excellent bathrooms and very comfy beds. Bang in the middle of the pedestrianised ancient quarter, but ample public parking 5 mins walk, which is free from 17.00 to 08.00.
