Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

Art Hotel Commercianti

Art Hotel Commercianti

8/10 Good
"The Art Hotel was very nice, and lived up to its name, with beautiful pieces of art attractively displayed throughout. I would give in 4.5, and not a 5, only because the brewed coffee in the dining room was terrible, and things that should have been hot, were not. That included the scrambled eggs, bacon, side vegetables, and aforementioned coffee and hot water. It was like the food warmers and hot pots were not ever turned on. We were there 4 nights, and it was the same each morning. Other than that, food was excellent, and location couldn't be beat."

"Great room, great breakfast, huge pool that was really well maintained (but the hotel should consider having a separate section for kids). Friendly and helpful staff. On the 15th of August the hotel offered by the pool free sangria, ice cream and water melon (all top quality). There was a huge mall 5 mins walking distance, which was fantastic. Easy access to city centre by the 89 bus. A great experience"

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bologna

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Bologna is during January, February, and August, when hotel prices are likely to be lower. To fully appreciate the city's rich history and culture, a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. This duration allows you to explore significant landmarks such as the stunning cathedral, historical museums, and charming cafes, as well as the renowned university and various monuments. Enjoying the local dining scene and shopping opportunities will also provide great value for money during your visit.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Hotels.com offers DealsOpens in a new window for Bologna hotels, where you may discover attractive discounts. Consider enabling email alerts or push notifications to ensure you remain updated on any flash sales or special offers.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate based on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates could help you find a more affordable stay in a hotel in Bologna. For those in search of unique accommodations, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised experience and may offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below average. If the price appears to be on the higher side, we can suggest alternative dates that may help you discover a more advantageous option.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to command higher prices. However, thanks to Bologna's superb public transport network, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel slightly further afield that remains well connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even nearby, lesser-known cities, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide both a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
