Tudor in name, Tudor in experience

I've stayed at a number of hotels over the last 20+ years for work and have to say this was probably the worst. From the slightly rude person at check in who made me feel stupid for not informing them I might want dinner to the room that felt more Tudor than it probably should have done. There was a birthday during the evening, which didn't finish it seems until nearly 2am - not helpful when your bedroom is above the bar. The room had minimal sound insulation against the road (which to be fair for a building of this age and listing isn't too surprising), and the macerators on the toilets randomly went off during the night. What took the experience over the edge in the morning was finding the electric sockets were faulty (top pin from the lamp plug had broken off previously into the socket and not fixed) and also that the water coming out of the shower was brown. Needless to say I tried to leave the hotel as quickly as possible after that. This may be an isolated case, as other reviews have been positive, but I really did not expect such a poor experience from a hotel that wasn't overly cheap. The only redeeming factor was that the food from the restaurant was actually very good. However, I would not recommend anyone staying here in its current state.

Nice stay

This is a very old building with lots of character, my room was fairly basic but clean, tidy and comfortable. Breakfast was very nice and all of the staff I encountered were very friendly.

Sleep deprivation

The female staff were very good despite the work load. The Hotels history is amazing and the room was warm and reasonably comfortable. Now for the bad bit. We did not get any sleep due to a group of people talking loudly all night in the bar below our room. If they wanted a get together then why put paying guests through the ordeal of being awake all night. I can only assume they weren't paying guests as they would have been asked to keep the noise down. We stayed here as we were working in the area and to save us an early morning drive. I wish I hadn't bothered. I feel awful and all because of some selfish idiots. I would never return or recommend this hotel while these people are managing or owning the place. AVOID.

Poor and dated rooms. Safety issue as there was a fire alarm at 1.00am and the internal phones didn't work. You couldn't even call the hotel as the phones only light up and don't ring. I was in room 10 on the top floor and if there had been a fire, I would have struggled to escape. one way in one way out. No one checked or explained the fire alarm was a guest being stupid. If you could call reception to assess, then you can go back to sleep. Dated hotel, poor service, I will not be back there.

Lovely Hotel, clean and tidy and really nice staff. Perfect location, 5 mins walk from every Saint Albans attraction. Will definitely get back.

Sloping floor,window will not shut

Arrived early,so booked in car in carpark, then went to meet family. Returned at 17.30 to check in, noone on reception,having stood for 15mins a man appeared from a side cupboard,no greeting was given. I said my name,he couldn't find us,then l explained we had checked in carpark early,just need to check into our room. I couldn't understand what he said, after 3attempt my husband heard breakfast to which l replied" is this included". To which he replied no. I only needed to room...but after he took the money he said "room 14 second floor " l had a stick he didn't offer to take my bags and certainly didn't tell us about the very low ceiling on top of the stairs . I understand how old the building is but the floor in our room was very uneven , it sloped about 25-30% into the on suite .window didnt shut,so traffic noise and draft all night. We didnt get much sleep at all. Room was dirty.
