nice place better than what i expected,but seemed further from venue than i was told,i would stay again.

Only stayed one night after flying in from UK. Inn is close to the airport. Ground floor room was very comfortable with fridge, but lacked natural light. Continental breakfast was included in the price. Staff and owners very friendly and helpful.

This is a great find! Never expected to find something so nice for such and amazing price. Beautiful Inn, so so surroundings but very safe and close to everything. Staff is awesome! Had a funny snafu with my key but they were so accommodating. Will stay here as a first choice.

This Inn is beautifully well kept as an Inn and the designs of the room are interesting. We had an ensuite bathroom which was very roomy and extra clean, the bedroom had a queen bed in a small room and a little sitting area with micro and frig. There are no elevators and the stairs are steep to second and third floor. Some rooms have a hallway private […] bath that locks with room key. Continental breakfast had muffins, croissants, cereals, toast yogurt and fresh fruit and juices. Coffee , tea and hot chocolate available 24hrs in main lobby. I was a little nervous about this booking at first, having never had experience with the "european style" accomodations of hall bathrooms, but I'm so glad I took a chance. (Low rate really helped there.) Everything was clean, everyone was friendly, and not having bathroom attached was totally not a problem. Breakfast was more than I was expecting. I […] would definitely stay again. Only change I would make is perhaps for a stay of more than one night to go with a room with two beds as the single bed rooms are pretty tiny. Quaint spot, great price and a quick walk or car ride to anything you may need in the Portland area.

Friendly and helpful staff. Room was comfortable and decorated in traditional English b&b style. Overall a comfortable stay but a little out if the city centre.

I booked at the last minute, the inn was easy to get to. We had a truck and found that parking in the reserved spaces at the Chinese restaurant was easier for us than the small lot in back of the Inn. The people at the desk could no have been nicer. The room was comfortable and the bathroom (across the hall for us) was very clean. It's not the closest […] to downtown Portland, but in pleasant weather it could be a nice walk. bathroom is located in the hallway !!!!! #2 The bar across the street, THE BARTENDER STOLE 20 DOLLARS, GAVE HIM $20 BILL TO PAY FOR MY DRINK AND THE JUST PAYED STUPID SAYING THAT I NEVER GAVE HIM ANYTHING, THIS WAS IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES... Only good part of the place was the Thai restaurant 1 block down walking distance

This Inn is absolutely adorable, accommodating, comfortable & affordable! I will definitely be staying here again in the future, much better than staying in a standard chain hotel!

This is a very cozy, welcoming little hotel - it felt like being in Europe. They have thought of everything. Very kind, helpful staff. I was there on a snowy day and the staff cleaned the snow off of the guests' cars. You can't compare the experience to some generic chain hotel. It is very sweet and a terrific value.

My boyfriend and I decided with little time to plan that we wanted to go to Portland ME. In a hotel we wanted one that was a) affordable b) walking distance to Old Port and c) good reputation for being clean. The Inn at St. John was all those things, albeit a bit quirky. My boyfriend loved the victorian charm and we both didn't mind that our private […] bath was down the hall. It did have the smell of an older hotel; musky but not off-putting. Our room was tiny but that wasn't what we were there for so it was okay. The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of nice pillows to choose from. The heater in the window was pretty noisy when it started and stopped but otherwise the room temp was comfortable. The room was a bit dusty and seems like it could use a good deep cleaning but it was charming and not overwhelming issues with the cleanliness of the room. We didn't stick around for breakfast but my boyfriend commented on how huge the muffins were. The walk downtown is pretty quick. About 15 min to get to the outskirts of the downtown area and a total of about 30 minutes if you want to go to the waterfront or that famous floating restaurant. The first part of the walk is up hill, which was fine for us but I could see how it could be frustrating not knowing that beforehand if you can't do hills but had planned on a lot of walking. The hotel was easily accessible to the Hwy. The room was very clean and neat. Bed was very comfortable. The primary heat source was an oil filled space heater which heated up fine but the room was cold when I got there so it took a bit to warm up and a bit difficult to regulate the temp. We really ejoyed our stay! Our room was an inside room with no window which we dont mind but it was neat and clean and had alot of charm. There was a nice selection for the continental breakfast which was included with our stay. We would definately stay there again if we are in the area!

We choose this hotel because we were taking a trip on a tight budget. You wouldn't have known it was a budget purchase. The hotel has lots of character and was clean and nice. The staff was friendly and we would stay again if the opportunity arose...

The hotel is located on St John St. The beds are very comfortable and the staff is homey, friendly and professional. We are a gay couple. We read the reviews just a day ahead on our road trip around New England. And decided to go there for such a low price and great reviews, renting on hotels.com. This Inn was lovely and perfect for my needs. In the middle of a long week of business travel, this stay was a treat and make me feel like I was on a bit of a holiday.. The staff was extremely helpful. I was pleased with the quality of the room and the continental breakfast provided. I received a wonderful deal through hotel.com. I'm not sure I would want to pay full rates for this room... But the price was right for me and I would certainly stay there again.

We enjoyed the hotel very much. Very quaint, super quiet and the classic old decor put a cherry on top. The hotel was clean, and centrallly located to close attraction areas. I was very upset because of the Nor'easter I was unable to get a flight out and The Inn was not willing to refund any of the money I paid for my 2 day stay, I understand that this is a business but they could've refunded at least one day or given me a voucher to use on another stay in the near future.

Great Hotel, friendly and helpful hosts.

I had a wonderful time at the Inn. The staff was friendly, room was clean and comfortable. As a former resident of Portland I was very surprised at how nice the Inn was. While living in Portland I assumed the Inn was a less than desirable place to stay because of it's close proximity to the bus station; I admit that I was wrong. The Inn is convenient […] to downtown and not in a bad area as others have mentioned. Portland has a very low crime rate and there is no where I wouldn't walk alone at night. There may be some poorer parts of town but that shouldn't be confused with crime ridden. When we first walked into our room, we burst out laughing at how small it was. It was clean, and we liked the neighborhood, but they did not provide even little things like a dresser for clothes (probably too small to put one in the room) or even a hook to hang clothes in the bathroom.

The rooms are nice and the shared bath was workable. Saw one person in the hallway the whole stay and never had to wait for the bathroom. The Inn is a nice distance to walk into town or you can catch a bus or cab easily and cheaply. Old historic Inn,very small room,and bathroom in hall. Liked that they provided robe to get to and from bathroom. Walls must be thin though,could hear right thru the wall. Great price,affordable and quaint.

Overall, I was very happy at the Inn at St John. The pluses were the price (!), friendliness of the staff, and just a real easy going way about the place. There is no elevator and the stairs are a bit steep. The immediate parking lot is tight but they have an overflow lot just next door. This is a lovely Inn with great staff just off Interstate adjacent to Maine Medical Center.

Excellent staff. Even though it is about a 1 mile walk to to downtown this an excellent place to stay. Would recommend.

My husband and I spent 2 nights there and had a wonderful time. The decor is adorable and speaks to it's over 100 year old history. Our room and shared bathroom were kept clean at all times. The mismatched towels and bathrobes addded to the quaintness of the room that I had been hoping for when we booked the inn. The part of town wasn't my favorite, […] not because of conditions but because there's just not much there. We walked down to historic Old Port from the hotel and it wasn't a bad walk, just not much to see, and the cab ride home was very cheap. I have to admit it's been years since I've had to put on flip flops and walk down to a shared hall bath but it wasn't nearly as inconvenient as I expected. I never actually saw any of the other guests on our floor even though the hotel was full. The bathroom was available every time we needed it and the provided robes were helpful for not needing to bring your clothes with you for showers. Our room had a sink and mirror so basic getting ready could be done there. The inn does NOT have an elevator so if you have a lot of luggage, be prepared for the steep, narrow hike. This stay was the second stop on a week long trip for us so we had several heavy bags which made for a not so fun walk up to the fourth floor but that was our bad, not the hotels. Very nice and affortable. We were imppresssed by the decor and service. The only problem we had was that our bathroom was across the hall . I will recommend this hotel to my friend.
