We were three adults and two kids. We got a room with two beds and a sofa bed. It was fantastic, and HUGE!

Had an amazing stay at The Opal. The staff was very helpful and helped alot trying to assist on directions to surrounding places. There are alot of places to eat surrounding the hotel which was great for 3 day stay. This hotel is alittle older but still liked it. I would definently stay there again and recommend it to other people.

On arrival the French lady behind the front desk couldnt have been more helpful, she had a great personality and was most helpful in answering the questions that we put to her. I wish we had found the hotel earlier in our holiday.

You get what you pay for. In some ways I wish I'd paid more. Breakfast was more like being in a youth hostel and the room was very basic with no tea making facilities, safe etc. however the location is excellent. It's very easy to reach all parts of town by bus or trolley. If you just want somewhere to lay your head and prefer to spend your money on […] meals and experiences, this is a good choice. The Opal was a very good bargin hotel in a rather expensive city. The general manager was very pleasant and the staff were always nice and helpful. The king room was clean and very spacious. The hotel is undergoing renovations but the work was mostly unobtrusive and wasn't an issue during our stay. The Tenderloin area is a block or two away but we never […] once felt unsafe either walking through it during the day or night, or coming and going from the hotel. It was super convenient having Mel‘s Drive-in on the ground floor - what a great breakfast place! And best of all, we were only a few blocks away from one of the best Creole restaurants in SF, Brenda‘s on Polk - sweet potato pancakes, cheese grits and the most sinful biscuits! That alone is worth staying at The Opal...being close to Brenda‘s! I choose this hotel based on Location and Price (Including parking). It paid off wonderfully. It is just blocks from the trolley cars so very easy to get anywhere. The price pretty reasonable for SF. The draw backs - LOUD we were in the area around the garage. WOW a lot of noise. The doors opening, the street, the trash being taken out. WOW really loud. […] It is Very possible other parts of the hotel do not have this problem. And finally the Included breakfast could use some fluffing. Either more options or change it a bit day to day. (but hey it was included and gave us some food before heading out to sight see in SF) Yes I would say here again. The hotel was reasonably clean. The breakfast was good considering the cost was included in the hotel rate. Local buses passed nearby making it realtively easy to get into the city centre

Front desk was so nice and helpful, hotel was clean and comfortable. Thought it was a little closer to the wharf than it turned out to be. Would stay there again.

This was my second stay at The Opal and I was pleased with my accommodations again. The continental breakfast is very nice and my room was clean and comfortable.

I paid about $440 for 2 nights in May. The room was a bit cramped but OK. Next to the Tenderloin district and little Saigon, it's a mixed area. The staff were polite and helpful. I would probably try to find somewhere else next time,

The hotel staff were amazing, anything they could do to make our stay better they would do. The hotel is beautiful , clean, and so easy to get to public transportation. I will stay there again. Great value for all the bonuses and we were all very happy with all aspects of our stay here.

Positive: A bus to Union Square came right in front of the hotel, the neighborhood was safe, the breakfast was light (breads, yogurt, cold eggs and fruit). Mel's diner is attached for a heartier breakfast and great home-cooked meals at a reasonable price. The Opal rooms were large and clean. Was disappointed that we had to pay for parking in our own hotel and was not told this until we checked in. Spent $130 just for parking for the weekend

I enjoyed the free breakfast and thought overall the hotel was clean and very convenient to downtown. Movie theater right beside hotel as well! However, the building across Van Ness from the hotel looked like a slum building. I know this has nothing to do with The Opal, but I was a little fearful when I was walking at night in the area.

The Opal was the perfect hotel for us this trip. It's in an awesome location downtown; close to great shops, entertainment and has a nice ambiance. We'll be staying here again.

Perfectly acceptable hotel in a very convenient location tho the immediate surroundings lack charm. It is a bit frayed around the edges and service is no frills, but this seems a good trade-off for the reasonable (by San Francsico standards anyway) price.

Convenient to get around with public transport from and to the hotel. Breakfast was very good for this price range. Enjoyed my stay!

The staff is very friendly, the room is comfortable, clean, but smell a little bit bad, is possible due the old carpet, with wifi, continental breakfast is good, . Is located to 8 blocks to union square, where the tourist bus makes a main stop. Theres a lot of choices to have meals.

The location is nice and it is right along the bus route. The hotel is old and the carpet is very old. The bed was comfortable. I would just take alot of clorox wipes and not walk barefoot on the floor. The hotel staff are very nice and helpful. I travel a lot. This is a very good choice for the price when staying near Union Square. The bed was comfortable. The people at the front desk were very nice and helpful with any request. A standard breakfast with lite yogurt and bagels was included with the room. There were a few homeless people but the caused no issues.

Probably good value for money considering how expensive San Francisco is. the Hotel is old and a bit shabby but it was very clean and the staff were very professional and helpful. I would like to have had a small frig in my room but other things made up for it like 24 hr tea/coffee available in lobby and free breakfast. This was basic but reasonably […] healthy. We loved our stay at the Opal. The interior is beatiful and very clean. Our room was spacious. The continental breakfast was fantastic with fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels and whole grain bread. And of course coffee. Mel's diner has tasty food and you can walk right in from the hotel lobby. Highly recommend!!!

A great value. Clean room, comfortable bed, and a continental breakfast. Not the greatest neighborhood, but within walking distance of some must see destinations.

I thought the hotel was nice considering the rougher appearance of its surrounding area. The staff was young, friendly, accommodating and what I would expect for the rate. The building isoldish and the walls are thin... I could hear an adjacent couple getting it on one night, but I wrote it off as part of the 'urban experience.' My room faced one of […] the cross-streets, so it could be loud at times due to traffic. I don't blame the hotel for that, but it is something to consider if you are expecting a quieter experience. The noise never kept me from sleeping. Before I left for my trip, I did read reviews about some of the floors wreaking of pot, which I certainly experienced. Overall it was ok. If have no other choice, then go for this. Its not far from golden gate bridge, lombard street, fisherman wharf if you have a car. But when if u need to walk outside, then i will not walk outside with a family after sunset. Too many homeless outside. inside is clean. Reasonable daily clean area for breakfast. It could be better if […] there was cereal, waffle also. Lobby area is nice and clean. I liked about daily 24 hr coffee, hot water available in the lobby. The front desk reception people are good, nice and helpful. They guide u well. Problem was only one elevator and they close the stairs to go to parking lot via stairs. It gets crowded in elevator. Rooms inside are spacious. Outside rooms are smaller. I had booked a larger deluxe room but then i asked for a room near my family. They gave me an outside, that was good also but still charged for a large room. I do not know why? Anyway, overall, not a bad hotel if with family. No smoking area.
