we did not know what to expect from reading previous reviews. Stayed for 10 nights in April 2013, room was on the 12th floor, basic with old furniture but comfortable. Paid for Breakfast and this is where they let themselves down, coffee, orange juice and crossants only availble if you get there early and queue! The first room we were given was absolutely atrocious, dingy and dark with a view of the side of their building. I called the front desk to express my disappointment and we were upgraded to a 2 room suite, with 2 huge windows overlooking the city! Great service. Friendly staff. Awesome location. Hotel looks like something out of a 50's horror film. Rooms are not what they look like in photos online. Decor is super out of date. When we arrived, our bed sheets were dirty and stained.

The hotel was built in 1911. It is very old and hasn't been updated. It has a funny, old musty smell. Not worth saving the extra buck.

It's beautiful as soon as you walk in but the people were rude, the rooms were nasty! Luckily I had Lysol with me! I wiped down the toilet and the rag was brown, the towels had stains, and I was afraid to take a shower!!!!!! Great location but trashy place!

Super close to Madison Square Garden, Empire State Building and 10 blocks from Times Square. 34th st Penn station right there. Food is not an issue as its all in working distance. This hotel is huge and while the lobby is in great shape the rooms are a different story. While they are spotless, the room is small and in dire need of remodeling. We have reserved two rooms and became apartmann with 3 rooms , 4 bathrooms,... . we where very suprised . When you come in hotel it takes too long to become room. good location.

Staff at the lobby is rude. Internet is not included, they have normal Internet for $11/Day and premium Internet for $15/Day... got premium, but the premium service is very slow. Ripped off furniture and bed sheets in the room.

We needed something close to Penn Station and this is directly across the street. It is a large hotel that serves tourists and tourist groups. The lobby is loud and busy. The hotel lobby staff was brusk and rather rude. The floor off the elevator on the 9th floor was typically littered with discarded candy wrappers or napkins, etc... The room was fine […] and not as small as I was expecting. The mattress was old, but the linen was clean. Small but clean bathroom with hot water. The room was in poor repair and very shabby. The main light fixture was very dim, and the bedside lamp did not work, and a call to the desk did not get it fixed. This is a great location, but that's all that I can really say positive. We received contradictory and unhelpful information while checking in and got yelled at by the receptionist. I always stay at Hotel Penn. because it is extremely convient, close to everything, always has a room available and is the cheapest around. having read the reviews after we booked we were a little concerned.However we were pleased when we arrived. The staff were very helpful and we were booked in without problems and taken to our room with our luggage by a very helpful Bell Boy. The shower was hot, The bed comfortable. The hotel maybe does need a little refurbishment but its difficult to see how this could be done on the price you pay in a great location. The lifts were always running and there was always one available as there is a lobby of twelve. The breakfast is a continental one and self service in a very small room. However there is nothing to stop you collecting what you want to eat and take it to your room or the option we choose on the second day to get our own either from the lobby shop or from the many eateries on the station concourse which is just over the road. We are booked to go back for another week at the end of our holiday and we will enjoy our stay. The saying you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear comes to mind but the staff certainly try their best in a very old but still majestic building. The service and rooms are second rate. There was chipped paint, old fixtures, etc. Nevertheless you couldn't beat the convenience of being across the street from Penn Station.

This huge hotel probably has an equally huge range of rooms. Ours was perfectly acceptable, if a bit dated. Bed was comfortable and linen and towels clean. The location opposite Penn Station was great for us, with frequent trains to Newark Airport at very reasonable cost. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

The room was very clean and we felt very safe. It was an excellent location. The rooms were not up to date but ok. The beds were hard and towels were stained. No amenities. Right next to Penn station and the empire state building

I have been staying in this hotel since the 1970s and can't think of a more convenient location for anyone coming in by train or bus. I have never had any complaints about their service before. However, during my last stay there, I tried to extend my stay at the hotel by one day, and at the same rate. I have done this many times before by simply calling […] down to the registration desk where I was given the coutesy of the same special rate I got through Hotels.com or pay their higher rate. This time, they insisted I rebook with Hotels.com but that I would also have to check out and check back in! We made our reservations through Hotel.com and paid up front. The regular price for a double bed was $109.00, but we wanted a King size, so paid an extra $45.00 for the extra size bed. I was absolutely grossed out by this place. The walls are dirty and paint is peeling. The mattresses and sheets are stained. The rugs are stained, dirty and smelly. It was too hot and you could not turn off the a/c. The elevators are noisy (like someone in the basement is turning the crank). Never again.

My coworker stays here and he did not experience the same things as I did. The air conditioner didn't work cause it was a heating unit. You could see the settings. The walls were paper thin. The water pressure in shower didn't always work. The shower head was low and the size of a half dollar.

Run down, stinking rooms, breakfast is not worth to be called breakfast (50 people in a tiny room queuing for a coffee and a bagel, no place to sit). Never again.

If I had to rate your hotel on the first person at the front desk I met - your rating would be MUCH lower. She was rude, uninformative and doing personal business while waiting on us. The location couldn't be better. We were attending an event at Madison Square Garden. The lobby was large and well maintained however the room was very small (not unusual for NY) and in need of updating and a deep cleaning.
