Friendly and helpful staff. Delicious food. A great location for sightseeing and shopping. Add to this the experience of The Chef's Table at Amuse and you really will enjoy your stay even more.

Pricey and not very convenient...

We stayed two nights in June and we found the Essex to be very clean and hospitable. The restaurant (The Tavern) was a great casual place to eat. The pool and hot tub were very clean without feeling like you were bathing in chlorine. And we found the place centrally located enough so that we were easily able to jump out for dinner, hiking, shopping, […] etc. in the surrounding towns (Burlington, Richmond, Shelburne, etc. Also, the room was very clean, the bed was really comfortable and the room was well noise-insulated so we didn't hear a lot of disturbing noise, which was nice. We enjoyed our stay at the Essex. Front desk personnel were friendly and helpful, even when we had to request maid service for our room at 4 pm (requested twice for a 4 night stay). The room was very clean upon check in. Maid service was sketchy after that. We were told that housekeeping was not properly staffed for a holiday week and a fully booked […] hotel. The Tavern was okay - not what one would expect for a culinary school. Service was very slow - expect a long wait. I ordered a pasta and lobster dish that was far too spicy to consume. The response from the waitress was that I should have asked for it to be prepared less spicy. Not quite the response that should have been delivered to a paying customer. (no mention in the menu that the spiciness can be tailored to taste). One of the cleanest hotels that we have stayed at. The pool and locker rooms were very clean and well maintained. The hotel staff were very helpful. We went to Jay Peak to ski and the front desk clerk was very helpful in printing us a ski report and directions. We would definitely go again. The hotel is beautiful. The people at check-in were friendly and helpful. I had a great drink at the Tavern. We had dinner at Butler's. My sister got a massage at the Spa. She paid for a deep tissue massage but got more of a Swedish, but she still enjoyed it. Everyone throughout the hotel was great. Check-out was the only mishap we encountered. We got […] up early to be able to catch a flight. The girl at registration was back in some room behind registration. We had to wait for her to notice us. Then it took some time for her to check us out even though all we should have had to do is return the keys. And we wanted her to confirm that our directions to the airport, from Mapquest, were the best route to take. She didn't seem knowledgeable about the area. She kept looking for a preprinted card with the information that the hotel provides but couldn't find it. Only after searching a 4th time, did she finally find the card. Hotel is a nice place to stay in the area. The builiding and grounds are in good shape but are starting to show wear and need to be updated. Food was good, but was expecting more from the culinary institute. Be careful when ordering as items are usually different than listed. Room was good but dated and bed was not comfortable and old.

For a hotel that boasts a culinary experience, this place fell way short. The food was not great, actually the fish and chips lacked flavor all together. The chicken with warm couscous would have been great if the chicken weren't burned on the edges. The bread basket was pathetic, the lemonade from a powder mix. The worst was when we had been waiting […] a very long time for our dinner to come, the waiter stopped by to check on us and we were overpowered by the smell of cigarette smoke. They may have chased the annoying flies away, though. The pool was cloudy. When asked about walking trails on the lovely property, we were given a 2 mile running route through the nearby neighborhood. Everything was just off the mark. We were saddened by the two double beds instead of the queen/king that was listed on our hotels.com reservation. We should have said something to the hotel after seeing our room, but didn't. Our fault. However the grounds were lovely, the room was clean, the hammocks outside were great for star gazing. The staff was friendly. Huge room and very nice staff (all levels).

Really enjoyed the bed. Very comfortable. The Tavern restaurant was great, service there was as high quality as the food. Close enough to anything you would want to go to in the Burlington area. Very quiet, nice place to get away from it all.

This hotel provided all the extras; great resort for couples or families. my husband appreciated the lap pool and we both enjoyed the outdoor whirlpool. Very spacious room with a totally enclosed bathrooom. our time was short but we would come for a longer stay!
